The Northern Cape Provincial government commemorated Freedom Day at Steynville Stadium in Hopetown on Wednesday 27 April 2016. The day was celebrated under theme of "Together building better Communities" – Local Government is Everybody’s Business. This commemoration provided an opportunity for the people to reflect on the progress the government have made since 1994. This year freedom month coincided with the 20th anniversary of the signing of the final draft of the constitution into law and 100 years of Sol Plaatje’s book titled, Natives Life in South Africa.
In her keynote address, Premier Sylvia Lucas stated “I want to clearly state that anyone who threatens our right to freedom and democracy will not succeed, we will defend our democracy with our lives in a responsible and respectful manner”. She explained that our government has made significant progress in delivering services to the people and at the same time changing their social and economic conditions.
Provincial government held service delivery exhibitions at the venue where community members were assisted with registration of ID’s, social grants and other health related services. DEDaT also had an exhibition stall and used this opportunity to target the youth of the area with advice on how to start a business. The communication unit conducted a mini survey on public perception of the Department and will use this information to assist in terms of the Service Delivery Improvement Plans (SDIP) of the DEDaT.
