DEDaT and Geekulcha hosts the 2nd Annual Hackathon in the Northern Cape
The Department of Economic Development and Tourism in partnership with Geekulcha once again created an opportunity to IT and computer fundi’s to come and showcase their computer and technological skills at the NCDevHack event that took place in Upintgton from 16 – 18 September 2016. This was an intense 48 hour programming marathon.
The aim of the event was to provide an opportunity for IT students, computer programmers and all those interested in the ICT field to compete against each other and come up with ways to better the lives of community members, to improve service delivery and even to improve tourism in the province. Students from the Sol Plaatjie University, NCR TVET College, NC Urban TVET College, leaners from different high schools in Upington and entrepreneurs from across the Province were all present, participating in the event.These Hackathon activities are driven by the Knowledge Economy and Innovation Unit within the Policy, Research and Innovation Programme in DEDaT. Mr Mohau Girruite, an official from this unit spent some time on radio during the event to encourage the people of Upington to attend the event and explained the benefits that this initiative holds for Upington as a whole.
Prizes were awarded to the groups that came up with the most innovative, practical and sustainable applications. Groups developed applications in the medical field, service delivery environment and the renewable energy sector among others. Two groups from Upington took 2nd and 3rd place with a group from Sol Plaatjie University coming in 1st with their application focusing on unemployment especially among the youth, looking into the aspect of entrepreneurship specifically.
Stakeholders involved in this initiative included Standard Bank, Mlab, NCR TVET College, htxt.africa, NCDEV, O layers, Madskills, Geekulcha, SPU who provided support and assistance to ensure the success of this event. Some stakeholders sponsored the prizes for the winning teams.
